The Mardi Himal trek is a relatively new but increasingly popular trail, especially among those short on time. It is similar to the Poon Hill trek in duration but lacks the sweeping Annapurna panoramas. However, the Mardi Himal trek is packed with a different sort of drama - giant views of Machhapuchhare, the peak that looks like the tail of a fish. That, on top of exciting walks on airy mountain ridges as slopes fall away on both sides, makes for an unforgettable visit. A moderate trek suitable for hikers with some basic fitness.
This short trek can easily be extended into a longer trip to include the lush foothills of the Lower Annapurna range for travellers looking to explore the many fascinating hillside villages in the area, or even the Annapurna Base Camp in the heart of the Annapurna Sanctuary.
Day 1: Arrive in Nepal’s bustling capital of Kathmandu
The vast majority of visitors from around the world fly into Kathmandu, a sprawling city of more than 1.6 million people. As you step out of Tribhuvan International Airport, you will be greeted by your guide or a company representative who will drive you to your hotel. After finalising your itinerary with your guide at the hotel and answering any remaining questions you might have, you are free to go explore the warrens of colourful alleyways and tourist attractions in downtown Kathmandu. Restaurants, bars and shops open till late during peak tourist seasons.
Day 2: Drive from Kathmandu to Kalimati (1700m)
Depart early from Kathmandu for a drive through Nepal’s subtropical lowlands along a scenic highway with views of terraced fields and hillside villages by the Trishuli and Seti rivers. In the afternoon, we will arrive at Kalimati (1700m/5577ft), a peaceful village surrounded by lush forest and mountain views.
Day 3: Trek from Kalimati to Rest Camp (2600m)
The Mardi Himal trek is an adventure that begins at a relaxed pace up winding slopes and stone steps nestled in dense rhododendron and oak forests. The trail is relatively quiet, providing an immersive nature experience. Overnight at Rest Camp (2600m/8530ft), which offers panoramic views and a serene evening.
Day 4: Trek from Rest Camp to High Camp (3550m)
Ascend steeply through alpine forests and emerge onto open ridgelines as dramatic views of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli and Machhapuchhre get closer and closer. Occasionally, when the weather allows it, clouds form on both sides of the trail, now on a ridge that eventually leads to the fish-tailed peak of Machhapuchhre. At High Camp (3550m/11646ft), a cluster of teahouses and lodges on the ridge, sunset can be particularly stunning, with glowing peaks on the horizon.
Day 5: Hike to Mardi Himal Base Camp (4500m), then trek down to Badal Danda (3210m)
Today will be the most challenging day of the trek, starting in the early hours of the morning before sunrise. For roughly 3 or even 4 hours, depending on the pace of your trekking party, you will begin your ascent to Mardi Himal Base Camp (4500m/14764ft). Today’s trek features steep inclines over relatively short distances. Thus, we recommend going at a slow but steady pace, stopping frequently for water breaks and photo-taking sessions. Even closer views of Machhapuchhre, already seemingly within touching distance, can be had if you proceed further on the ridgeline and if time and your physical condition allow. Outstanding views can also be had at the official “Viewpoint” at 4200m (13780ft). You can turn around here if the altitude bothers you. After soaking in the views, descend carefully to Badal Danda (3210m/10532ft), known for its “sea of clouds” effect when the stars align!
Day 6: Trek from Badal Danda to Pothana (1890m)
Today will be a long descent through forest trails and charming Gurung villages. Walk through dense rhododendron forests with birdlife and occasional monkey sightings until you arrive at the village of Pothana (1890m/6200ft) after about 7 hours.
Day 7: Trek from Pothana to Ghatte Khola, then drive to Kathmandu
From Pothana, descend gently through terraced farmlands and forests for about 2 hours until you reach Ghatte Khola, where your vehicle awaits. Retracing the scenic highway route, you will arrive in Kathmandu in the early evening.
Day 8: Goodbye – for now
